This week, we’ve got articles from two of our favorite writers in tech. Enjoy!

WHAT’S INSIDE

Issue #157 (Nov 10th, 2021)
  • Tech jargon translator
  • Naming workplace types
  • Confusing chatbots: “Does not compute!”
  • Ghost words

ARTICLES 📰

😂 “I’d plus one doing the dogfooding for pain points async, but I don’t have the bandwidth.” If that made sense to you, “congrats” or perhaps, “my condolences.” And if not, don’t feel bad — that’s just some of that newfangled tech jargon.

Steve Howe (not pictured above) has done it again, so stop whatever you’re doing and read:

Welcome to tech, here’s your jargon translator

What’s the last thing you wrote that you’re proud of? If it’s “three disconnected words,” you might be a UX writer. Here, Matt Hayes shares how his team honed in on LinkedIn’s new workplace types.

Naming the new workplace types

Using figurative language can make a chatbot get its wires crossed: literally — I mean, figuratively! But promising new research may hold the key to getting dialogue systems to understand natural human language.

MICROCOPY BITE 💬

Here’s some dialogue from Kung Fu Panda 2 (bet you weren't expecting that):

“You must feel weak, let me get you some soup.”
“No, that’s OK, Dad. I’m not hungry.”

Now, here’s a cookie consent banner:

What do they have in common? “
That’s OK,” which in colloquial English can be a polite way to say “no,” like how Po the panda used it.

So when users scan this banner (which, of course, most will), they’re likely to interpret “That’s OK" as “No, thanks.”

Something like, “Agree & accept” or “Confirm” would be clearer.
